CD Review - Rick Ednie -WHITE TURTLE DOVE

Image635840661529526816Homegrown to be sure. WHITE TURTLE DOVE is a compilation of all original music from Rick Ednie.

Rick was born in Philadelphia, but was raised west of the city in the dairy and corn fields of eastern PA. He began playing music "by ear" on his mother's piano spending many hours playing and singing with records from artists such as The Everly Brothers, John Denver, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Cat Stevens and others, including Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest, and others .

After moving to the central coast of California in the mid 1990's, Rick's guitar playing shifted from Texas electric blues to acoustic and was bitten by the Bluegrass Bug after attending a pre-Strawberry Music Festival party.

This slickly packaged CD contains 8 original songs and 1 instrumental, all written by Ednie. In spite of having been bitten by the Bluegrass Bug, Rick refers to his style as “roots-based contemporary Bluegrass and Americana.” I've slowly discovered that “Americana” is a refuge genre' for that music and those artists who's music doesn't quite fit in the, sometimes tight, parking spots of Country, Folk and Bluegrass. Not to say that the music isn't good.  I am all for the Americana category. Hopefully, artists who have been promoting themselves as “bluegrass”, but are not, will now migrate to that wide open parking lot.

Listening to WHITE TURTLE DOVE leaves no doubt that Rick loves this music. Writing new songs using the same 3 or 4 chords and having them stand on their own is not an easy task. Mr. Ednie should be proud of that accomplishment.

The recording has a festival campground jam vibe to it. That's not necessarily a bad thing. He has gathered up some decent pickers for this project. Though not as polished as an A list band release, The Rick Ednies of world are the people that keep putting coins in the music meter.

  1. I actually think this CD White Turtle Dove is the best stand out Bluegrass or where ever you want to park it that I've heard for a long time. It's clean but not over succumbed by a good studio sound, has great live sounding elements and the song stories are clear and understandable, I appreciate that kind of song writing more than anything. This set of songs create a soul of a creative outburst that I pray Rick can continue to create and grow. Everyone who loves bluegrass should have this CD in their collection if you don't you are missing pure excellence and joy of this essential American Music no matter where you park. Best regards To you Rick and success in this White Turtle Dove ! Sincerely, Elicia Burton
